Compton Place Manor House -
South Elevation Structural Repairs

Compton Place is Eastbourne’s only Grade I listed building and Hawk have a long term working relationship with the client and estate management team to undertake essential repairs and maintenance.

Hawk were initially engaged to replace the lead parapet gutters along the South Elevation, however, it was discovered that 10 of the 14 structural oak trusses had extensive rot and were at imminent risk of collapse.  The ceilings internally feature unique decorative stucco plasterwork, known to be some of the finest work in England, at nearly 300 years old. “One of the most opulent examples in England” Decorative Plasterwork in Great Britain, Geoffrey Beard 1975:59.

 All repair works therefore had to be completed from above, using a highly specialist external temporary works installation, and all completed whilst the building remained in occupation.

This was an incredibly complex project that required very careful design, planning and co-ordination. The whole process and final scheme was driven by the absolute requirement to protect the existing fabric of the building, particularly the Stucco Plasterwork Ceiling below.

The teams’ efforts were rewarded with recognition from the Sussex Heritage Trust Award Judges with the project receiving an award under the commercial works category.

The judges said;

“A structural restoration project of a very high standard. The ingenious repair techniques are faultless. A superb project!"
